Tangled Roots: The Diversity, Culture & Identity of Textured Hair

  • Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts 110 Finney Avenue Suffolk, VA, 23434 United States (map)

celebrating the deeper meaning and expressions of the textured hair community

Join Goodsociety and Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts for an afternoon of exploration, reflection, and immersion, as we search for the deeper meaning of the struggles, pathways, and triumphs to be found within the textured hair community. This will be a day full of networking, opportunities for learning, shopping, and relationship building.

Tangled Roots seeks to explore the conversations, feelings, and undertones discovered in the salons and shops of the urban diaspora. Through dialogue, engagement, and connection, Tangled Roots will provide a moment for the greater public to better understand the culture and lifestyle of having textured hair.

Interact with local cosmetology professionals and thought leaders on a host of topics. Uncover deeper meaning as expressed through the works of visual artists. Discover, sample, and purchase a variety of products as you shop the vendor market. Need recommendations on care or styling? Want to meet a new barber or beautician? Or maybe just a chance to be in the atmosphere of it all? Head into the Tangled Roots “pop-up” salon and barbershop to see what it really feels, smells, and looks like.

Food, beverage, and an eclectic setlist of soulful performers will be provided for the attendees’ enjoyment. From youth to senior, all identities and orientations are welcome. This event is free and open to the public. There will be a takeaway and point of engagement for everyone. Come enjoy this free festivity that celebrates the beauty, power, passion, and excitement within the textured hair community.
